And it was sneaky. It presented itself as "good" and "kind" but actually, I was stuck in autopilot reaction mode. If someone I loved was upset, I absorbed it. If my own emotions went negative, I was automatically at their mercy. I didn't know how to *not* be affected.
I was over-responsible, deeply overthinking, and completely ungrounded.
What I thought was "right" was actually me being absent from myself. I didn't have a sense of inner real estate—no grounded center to live from. My thoughts spun, my body felt hijacked, and my time was never really mine. If my husband said something, if a kid needed me, if energy in the room shifted—I lost my footing. Instantly.
Even though I was immersed in mindset work, therapy, and coaching, I was still trying to *think* my way to peace. I hadn't yet learned the language of energy. I didn't know how to listen to my body or how to access the root experience beneath all the mental noise.
There was a night I sat in the hot tub with my husband with a huge buildup of tension. It hadn't been a particularly big fight... just a passive aggressive wordless wedge between us. I kept trying to fix it with over-explanations and shouldering vague responsibility (ie fawning) - but those typical nervous system responses did nothing this time.
I'd feel the huge urge to fix the obvious tension... and there was nothing I could do.
We sat in silence. The air was thick. My body felt crushed under the weight of emotional pressure I didn't know how to process. Suddenly I remembered my coach saying (on repeat): "Your feelings come from your thoughts!" But I didn't even know what I was feeling. *How the heck am I supposed to work with this?*
Finally a thought ran through my brain. *If I don't know what I'm feeling, maybe I know what I'm PHYSICALLY FEELING?* That I could see. I was frozen... my shoulders tight... my lungs felt smashed... my body felt trapped. Then I asked the question that gave me options I never knew I needed: "Is anyone forcing me to sit like this?" No. No one was forcing me.
So I practiced lowering my shoulders. Then lifted my chest. Then took a breath. Then lifted my chin, set my elbows on the ledge and sat like a queen on her throne.
For the first time, I realized I could literally change my experience, no matter what. Not by thinking my way out of it... Not by analyzing it to death... Just by awareness and authority over myself.
That moment broke a spell I'd been under my entire life, and kicked off a process that fuels me to this day.
I began checking in with my body 10 times a day.
Every single time I did, I felt better. I felt relief. I felt like I was *with* myself.
My body started to trust me—like a little dog that had been abandoned too many times, slowly turning toward me like, "Wait... are you taking care of us now?"
And I was. I stopped waiting for other people to make me feel okay. I started working with every little detail of the energy of my inner world.. I started connecting the dots spatially, visually, and somatically.
And here's what I really discovered...
I wasn't just learning techniques.
